“We’ve got a problem,” Wooten said, “and maybe it’ll be a deterrent if one of these disturbed persons or whackos thinks, ‘If I go in shooting, they may shoot back.’”
...
Wooten’s House Bill 199 would make it legal to carry licensed concealed handguns on all state colleges, from technical schools to universities.
Not only that, but the bill also would forbid colleges from enacting policies to limit the rights of gun owners from carrying concealed handguns on campuses.
Who elects these people???

Sorry Luke, I accidentally deleted your comment ... still getting familiar with the whole blog thing. Anyways, here's what Luke posted:
Wow. That is seriously extreme. While I normally support this theory in the real world, I'm not sure it's such a great idea on college campuses. However, at least he is trying to take action. Apparently school shootings are becoming quite a problem, and some solution needs to be found.

I just can't even begin to express how utterly ridiculous—how stupidly reactionary—I think this idea is. Let me see if I can follow his logic:
1) Emotionally distressed students have been shooting other students.
2) We can't take away guns from emotionally distressed students, because that would be against the constitution.
3) We should give guns to the rest of the student body (who are also potentially just as emotionally distressed) so that they can either a) deter the would-be shooters or b) defend themselves.
Rather than bringing the Wild West to schools, maybe we should revisit #2?
But I think #2 over-simplifies the issue of students obtaining guns. A student who has made up his mind to get a gun, bring it to school and start shooting people is going to get one whether he can legally access it or not.
Like I said, I don't think the proposed answer is the right one either, but neither is attempting to take guns away. Nevermind the constitution for a moment, the reality is that getting a gun is too easy for gun control to have a chance of working.
"the reality is that getting a gun is too easy for gun control to have a chance of working."
This is essentially what I mean by revisiting #2.
For instance, maybe we shouldn't allow guns to be sold online.
Or maybe the average citizen doesn't need access to handguns.
Or maybe Louisiana should consider requiring permits to purchase guns.
Or maybe a month-long waiting period ... or any waiting period for that matter ... would help.
I just don't see the answer being "Well lets just give everyone guns." At least not the logical answer ...
correct link for:
Maybe we shouldn't allow guns to be sold online
I really hate that comments can't be edited ...
Or maybe the average citizen doesn't need access to handguns
I say give everyone a gun and let god sort 'em out
not really =)
Guns don't kill people...people with guns kill people.
