VP Polls

SurveyUSA polled voters in Pennsylvania and New Mexico on potential VP choices. Edwards is the clear winner on the Democratic side (aside from Rendell in PA, others actually bring his number down), but I read this as a recognition issue—how many people outside of Kansas know who Kathleen Sebelius is?. SUSA also left out Clinton, Gore, Richardson, and Webb from the poll—odd considering the speculation surrounding these people, and especially odd considering Richardson was left out of the polling in his own state.

SurveyUSA added California:

How can you leave two of the four front runners out? Before I was a Clintonian I was a Richardsonairre. The real ticket should be Obama / Clinton. I always liked Survey USA but I don't understand this unless it was a commissioned poll.

I'm a little torn on the idea of polling for VP slots. Although it would be fun to see all of the major VP possibilities polled, I do think that any poll that includes lesser-known candidates is going to distort their potential impact on the race—meaning that these candidates would appear to drag the ticket down when compared to a more recognizable running mate. But I guess that's fine as long as less familiar (but still highly qualified) candidates aren't dismissed on the basis of poor polling.

In any case—if they're going to poll for running mates—I'd like to see the following in the mix, and I'd like to see a variety of states (of differing demographics and geographic locations) polled:

Obama/Clinton
Obama/Gore
Obama/Edwards
Obama/Richardson
Obama/Sebelius

Might also like to see:

Obama/Napolitano
Obama/McCaskill
Obama/Webb
Obama/Clark

I'm sure there are some other big names, but these are the ones that I see mentioned most often ... and the list is probably already too long to poll.

The Washington Post adds these names to the list.
